Frankenstein's Monster
Frankenstein's Monster

An ongoing personal project that I will probably never finish.

Lets face it, The Jack Pierce, Boris Karloff creation is so engrained into our minds that it can never be replaced. Its an amazing design that we all love. When I think of the Monster… Its Karloff that pops into my head… & then I think of the Bernie Wrightson’s illustrations. For me, Wrightson nailed it. Its perfect, terrifying and pitiful. If you don’t own a copy of the book with his artwork… well, check it out.

Mary Shelley describes the Creature very clearly in the book & I just can’t let it go. She envisioned him as 8ft tall, a hideously ugly creation with translucent yellow skin, pulled so taut that it scarcely covered the work of muscles & arteries beneath. Watery eyes, Prominent pearly white teeth & flowing black hair. His limbs were in proportion. He was fast, agile & very strong.

He is not a slow lumbering ogre, rather an intelligent, yet hideous creation that is rejected by his creator & abandoned. The book clearly describes his thoughts, grief & ultimate rage. So much material to inspire. I wanted to go back to the original source & try not to be influenced by other creations… which is almost impossible. But also a fantastic challenge & good fun.

So, here’s my take on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein’s Monster.
